I Am Not a Photographer

by Linsey Planeta on March 14, 2009

One thing that I harp on here is the need for professional photographs in a listing. There is no listing that should ever be without them. I am a Realtor - I am not a photographer.

Recently I took some shots of a new listing of mine.  Notice the dramatic difference between my shots and the pros.  I realize this confirms that I’m not a great photographer, but I hope it also illustrates the point.  A professional will understand lighting, they will have the wide angle lens necessary, and they understand the best angle for the shot.

Based on some of the crummy shots spread across the Internet and the MLS, I think it’s fair to say that Realtors should not be shooting their own listings.  Part of an agent’s job is to market a home and in my mind, good marketing begins with great photos.

Hi Linsey,
You are very right with your thoughts and experiments. I work with photographers and realtors as a photo editor and they both have a hell of a difference in their MLS photos. Obviusly photographers are qualified professionals and they know the compositions and they have the perfect gear to take outstanding photos, where as realtors only have a point and shoot camera and they can only take ordinary dark photos like you did. Me being a real estate photo editor always suggest realtors to get their properties photographed by pros to avoid having bad mls photos. However I always offer realtors a chance to get better images by editing them. Kindly visit my website http://www.ifixphoto.com to view the before after of my work and hope you like what you see.

For the Realtor who insists on taking their own, you certainly do make a big difference. But, I’m still a fan of a pro. If you are going to spend the money to fix them, an agent should hire a pro from the outset. Your work is excellent though.
